The deposit is Burundi's largest with reserves of about million tonnes making it one of the world's ten largest undeveloped resources. Mr Mushimantwari said that first nickel output will start at Musongati, in Burundi's southeast province of Rutana. The country plans to eventually produce about 2 million tonnes of nickel ore a year.

“Nickel research and exploitation is not an easy task, and it takes a long time,” the minister said. “This is the reason why we need support from donors.” The news agency says Burundi has three nickel deposits in the southeast and central parts of the country.

The authorities have issued six research permits to multinational miners. Mining licenses for three nickel-cobalt-copper deposits were obtained by UK’s Kermas Group.
